One of my earliest memories is watching my mother paint the oak tree in our front yard. Instead of a brown stick with green blob on top, her tree had bark and individual leaves - I wanted to do that too! It was the beginning of a love affair with paint. As a child I took classes at Phoenix muralist Jay Datus' Kachina School of Art and as a teenager spent 3 years studying with Latin American artist, Rafa Fernandez.
I'm amazed by the beauty of the natural world. Many years running research labs and working with microscopes have given me the urge to look closely at plants and flowers and to really see the world around me. I collect images in my mental scrapbook and make them mine by painting them. When the painting is gone, the image remains with me.
