Rebekah Fleming

I’m a neuroscientist turned medical writer, and I began blowing glass in 2018 at a public hot shop in Durham, NC. Since then, I’ve pursued technical mastery in Venetian-influenced glassblowing: studying with Bill Gudenrath, Jason McDonald, Boyd Sugiki and Lisa Zerkowitz, and completing an internship at Starworks (Star, NC). My work explores form, color, and the unique properties of molten glass through the discipline of making beautiful, functional objects.

My training as a scientist shapes how I work at the bench. Glassblowing is a conversation with forces that don’t negotiate: heat, gravity, centrifugal acceleration, and the narrow working range in which molten glass can take a form. Each tumbler, vase, and bottle is a record of that exchange, made to be held and used at home.

Glass is a hard game; it’s fun.
